Imogiri Royal Cemetery Imogiri is the official cemetery of the royal descendants from Yogyakarta and Surakarta. The royal graveyard is located on a hilltop, reachable by 345 stone steps leading to it. Imogiri is located about 17 kilometers to the South East of Yogyakarta and easily accessible by bus or car. The tombs are built within three main courtyards. Entry to the smaller courtyards housing the tombs of the princes is allowed only on Monday 09.00 - 12.00 or Friday 13.00 - 16.00. Traditional Javanese dress has to be worn, which can be hired on the spot at a modest fee. The cemetery is closed during the Moslem month of Ramadhan. |
Masjid Agung (The Royal Mosque) Masjid Agung is situated on the western side of the north square, near the Keraton or the palace. It is a place for praying and holding religious ceremonies for Moslems. Religious ceremonies like Sekaten and Gerebeg are held every year to celebrate the Islamic holidays. The mosque provides the Kraton room for religious activities. It's designed in Javanese traditional architecture with a special roof called "Tajug", whose shape is especially used for religious buildings. This traditional mosque is one of the most interesting because of its architecture. |
