Balinese have a strange level of communication media,
this no more communicates within man to man in this universe,
this is a way to communicate with "some things" from other
world.
Balinese believe that they can communicate with their ancestor,
spirits and even gods. And how do they do it? And what is
it for? They do it simply by making a small offering, named
pejati and bring it to the Balian (supernatural
figure) and tell the Balian what kind of "the service"
they want, for example they want to talk to their ancestor
spirits, then the Balian will concentrate for a moment
to invite the ancestor spirit and the Balian enter
into trance, now she represent the ancestor spirit, so they
can have a conversation with their ancestor.
Balinese usually go to the Balian when they will
hold ngaben ceremony. They want to know whether their
ancestor agree with the ritual and whether they have some
requests. Last month I joined with one Balinese family that
would run ngaben ceremony to visit Balian,
three days before the grandfather dead and in three day
they would do ngaben.
We went to Balian's house in Sanur to ask the last request
and does the spirit agree with the family's plan to use
wadah (pagoda) or not. We arrived at the house around
ten in the morning. And there were already three families
group waiting for.
After waiting for mere an hour, the turn was coming to us.
All the family's member sat around the Balian, then
within short ritual the Balian enter to trance, I
heard she called some names and my friend told me that those
name belongs to the family's member. This is just like a
sign that the spirit enters into Balian body is the
right one.
Then conversation appeared among the members with the Balian,
in this case is belief as the spirit of dead's grandfather.
The spirit said there's nothing to cry for him because it
was his time to die and he already got a good place.
His son asked about his last request and the spirit said
he wanted to bring his favorite cloth and new sarong with
his cremation and there's nothing to worry about the pagoda
and the procession, he really appreciated and could accepted
it.
For about half hour the family had conversation with the
spirit before it asked to go and gave some advice for all
of the family. During the conversation I saw some of the
member cry and sometimes they laugh or just smile when the
spirit told something secret about someone.
At the end all the family can accept the spirit request
and there were some happy faces because they knew that the
spirit had got a good place in his next life.
