Finding food to suit your taste in Jakarta is easy. An
extensive range of restaurants, cafes and bars are ready
to serve you with cuisines from all over the world, such
as Italian, Korean, Chinese, Mexican, Japanese, Thai, Brazilian,
European and also, of course, Indonesian. Here we look at
two of the city's best loved eateries, both of which are
sure to please even the most discerning visitors to Jakarta.
OASIS Restaurant
The Oasis restaurant on Jalan Raden Saleh No. 47 has been
recognized for its fine dining and delightful ambience since
1968. Housed in a colonial-style building, the Oasis has
a worldwide reputation for its European dishes and its 12-course
"rijstaffel". In addition to a superlative standard of food,
the well-trained waiters and elegant decoration are complemented
by an in-house orchestra, making the Oasis a favorite place
for VIP's such as Spain's King Juan Carlos, Malaysia's P.M.
Mahatir Mohamad and U.S. President Bill Clinton. If you're
looking for a place to entertain and impress your business
associates, the Oasis should certainly do the trick.
Ragusa Ice Cream
To
enjoy a scoop or two of fine ice cream, check out Ragusa
restaurant on Jalan Veteran I/10. Ragusa dates back to the
colonial era of the 1930s when two Italians, Luigi and Vincenso
Ragusa, set it up to sell European food and ice cream, the
latter being home-made from fresh milk supplied by the Dutch.
Ragusa's décor - old photographs showing the restaurant
in the past, expansive colonial fans, rattan seats and antique
wooden tables - classically evokes the elegant colonial
era of the 1930's, and sets the scene perfectly for the
restaurant's delectably creamy indulgences.
What
has made Ragusa popular for so many years is the continued
use of traditional recipes, which yield the distinctively
'home-made' as opposed to 'factory-made' flavored dish.
Indeed, the use of fresh fruit (with no chemical additives)
has won Ragusa ice cream the approval of presidents - Soekarno
was a regular Ragusan, as is ex-president Habibi. Are you
ready to indulge?
