Situated in the Kediri district approximately 12 km from
Tabanan, the village of Pejaten is famous for its clay ceramics.
Local people produce household accessories, such as washbasins,
bowls, pots, tiles and so on, decorated with Pejaten's famously
beautiful ornamentation of the flora and fauna. The tradition
is strong in the village, and families have been passing
down their craft for generations. More recently, the skills
of the craftsmen and women have become well known to tourists
and local business people, and the village now does good
trade.
Local earthenware producer I Gede Sadia said that back
in the 1970's, Pejaten was considered a poor village in
comparison to its neighbours. With the tourist boom in the
1980's, foreigners desire for local handicrafts has dramatically
changed the village's economy, and their products have become
well-known throughout the island. Government regulations
which stipulate that Balinese hotels must be constructed
from local material also led the villagers to start producing
roof tiles and bricks - a development which has served them
well over the years.
But they have by no means forgotten their tradition of
highly decorated crockery, and the village still supplies
many hotels and restaurants throughout the island. So if
you find yourself distracted from your food and wondering
where the beautiful crockery comes from, there's a fair
chanced you'll find the answer in Pejaten
