Yogyakarta ready to host ASEAN Tourism Forum
(ATF)
YOGYAKARTA (indo.com): Yogyakarta, Indonesia's second most
visited cultural destination after Bali, is ready to host
the ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) in January 2002, with delegates
expected "not to miss out on visiting local cultural
attractions". The ATF will be held from January 21
through 28.
"I would like to extend a "royal" welcome
to all delegates and to look forward to seeing you in
Yogyakarta," Governor and Sultan of Yogyakarta Sri
Sultan Hamengku Buwono X said here recently.
As Indonesia's second most popular destination, Yogyakarta
offers archaeological remains and a rich, thriving Javanese
culture. The city possesses world famous tourist attractions
such as the Sultan's Palace (Keraton), the Water Palace,
many smaller temple ruins and the nearby UNESCO-designated
World Heritage Sites of Borobudur and Prambanan temples.
There are numerous traditional Javanese performing arts
shows available throughout the province, including classical
Javanese dance in the royal tradition, gamelan music,
Ramayana ballets, and the popular shadow puppet theatre.
Meanwhile, Minister of Culture and Tourism I Gede Ardika
noted that the theme of next year's ATF will be "Natural
Links and Cultural Corridors", underlining the cooperation
and friendship that the ASEAN forum represents.
