Balinese women artists to display works
DENPASAR (indo.com): The Seniwati Gallery of Art by Women
will present a painting exhibition featuring works by
the two sisters Ni Putu Sriani and Ni Made Sudarmi. The
exhibition will be held at the Seniwati Show space on
February 2 - 27, 2002.
Both
Putu and Made learnt to paint when they were still in
primary school. Both learnt from their father, copying
his style of traditional Balinese art. They started their
careers by drawing sketches, followed by black and white
details and color and finishing.
After becoming students of lower middle school, they
both continued at art school, the SMSR in Batubulan, near
Denpasar. There, they learnt painting along with other
arts for four years. After graduating, Putu went on to
study modern art at home by herself, while Made concentrated
on landscapes and birds. Now she has mastered new techniques,
as is demonstrated in this show, but her work still maintains
its traditional roots.
After graduating from Art School, both girls joined Seniwati
Gallery of Art by Women and have participated a number
of times in group exhibitions with other women artists
of Bali. Putu is also a member of the gallery's staff
and has learnt a great deal from this experience since
joining. Both Putu and Made are supported in their artistic
learning not only by their parents but also by their husbands.
