Yogyakarta, the capital of the
special Province of Yogyakarta, is one of the important supreme cultural centers of Java.
The classical and contemporary Javanese dances with beautiful and graceful dance
movements, the "Wayang Kulit" leather puppet teachers, and all the other
traditional illustrations of art, including the contemporary art of paintings are strongly
connected with Yogya's cultural and sophisticated society. Yogyakarta is situated in the
shadows of active Merapi volcano, has an interesting historical background, once the seat
of the mighty Javanese empire of Mataram, where at a latter stage herpowers were split
into two sultanates, Yogyakarta and Surakarta (Solo). The sultans of Yogyakarta and the
palace is still the hub if the people's traditional life and still radiates the spirit of
refinement, which is clearly seen in their special rituals.
