BALI
Covering an area of some 2,000 square miles, the island of Bali is
Indonesia's principal tourist center, the island extends in east-west
direction for ninety-five miles, lying between longitudes 114° 25
and 115° 43 east. In a north-south direction it extends for fifty miles
between latitude 8° 03 and 8° 51 South. It has the
even and warm climate of the tropics with an average temperature of
28° C or 81° F.
The influence of Hinduism is well manifested not only in the people
and their way of life, but also in their arts, architecture and event
the landscape of the island. The 10,000 temples spread all over the
tiny island give you an impression of a legendary land. The strong
religious consciousness and the many festivals and rituals have drawn
the Balinese people closer together and created a society based on
communal living. Artistic pursuits are an integral part of Hinduism,
and the Balinese devote much of their time to making offerings,
weaving, carving, painting, dancing and playing gamelan orchestra.
In fact any visitor to Bali, at any time of the year, is sure to
witness at least one religious occasion or festival somewhere on
the island.
