Huge head of Garuda Wisnu statue to arrive in Bali
DENPASAR (indo.com): Efforts to develop the Garuda Wisnu
Kencana (GWK) cultural park project at the Ungasan Hill,
Jimbaran, Bali continues with the head of Garuda Wisnu statue
expected to reach Bali on September 22, 2001.
The
head of Garuda Wisnu statue, constructed at the Nyoman
Nuarta Studio in Bandung, West Java, will be placed at
the Ungasan Hill. To facilitate the shipment of the huge
head statue, the item has been divided into several smaller
parts before they were sent to the designated location
by around 15 trucks.
The Okokan dance was performed in Gilimanuk harbor, Negara
and Tabanan, to welcome the arrival of the group bringing
the huge head statue. The welcoming procession was held
to improve locals' appreciation of the presence of the
cultural park, which once brought forth controversy.
This ongoing statue project, which stands on the top
of Ungasan Hill, some 283 meters above the sea level,
is listed into the world's highest statue and proposed
to be the landmark of Bali. Even though the GWK's operational
is only 10% running recently.
Pros and cons on the existence of the Statue project
arose when the idea of the project was launched to the
public in 1993. Under its long-term plan, the Mandala
Garuda Wisnu Kencana Statue and Cultural Park project
will cover some 230 hectares of land in total.
Financial constraints led the GWK project to be called
to a halt for almost four years, starting from 1995 to
1999. The construction project commenced again in August
1999. Slowly but surely progress has been made, but through
the years of the monetary crisis the project was seriously
neglected. What really sticks in people's minds is the
fire which burned Garuda's head at the Nyoman Nuarta Studio
in Bandung, West Java in 1997.
This project can finally survive to move on, even without
any loans from banks in the amount of worth. Fund raising
activities conducted by GWK Foundation was a success,
with several companies and entrepreneurs in this country
expressing their commitment to develop the project for
the country's future generation.
GWK's Assistant Manager Gunadi Ngurah said that for the
time being, the statue-making project costs around Rp500
billion.
