Bali is a unique tourist destination, say foreign travelers
DENPASAR (indo.com): Despite the declining number of
foreign travellers due to the current global situation,
Bali continues to see a steady stream of enthusiastic
visitors.
Justine Montaque, an art curator from Germany, expressed
her admiration for the island to indo.com when visiting
the Balinese painter Nym Lokaswara's studio in Ubud. "I
have advised all my friends to come to Bali since nothing
dangerous has happened here. Chaos in other islands (in
Indonesia) has never adversely affected Bali because the
people are taking an active part in protecting the island
from any disturbance. Quite simply, to me Bali is a special
tourist destination". This statement was echoed by
many other foreign tourists.
In considering what makes the island so special, she
highlighted the combination of the friendly people, the
natural attractions, the great variety of things to see
and do, the year-round pleasant climate, and the absence
of security problems. And then there is Bali's special
"magic", which is difficult to explain.
"As you step off the plane", she said. "You
can sense the difference. In the villages you'll notice
the peace and wisdom in old people's faces, and the interest
and respect in those of the young. Old men sit at the
road-side caressing their fighting cocks. Beautifully
dressed women walk proudly through rice fields and forests
carrying offerings on their heads to the temple. There
is the smell of flowers, and in the distance you hear
the sound of gamelan music," she added.
Gods and spirits have been an important part of Bali's
daily life for hundreds of years. Gunung Agung, Bali's
holiest mountain, is internationally regarded as one of
the eight "Chakra" (points of the world). This
may be more than a coincidence. Watch out: once you have
felt the magic of this island you will be addicted for
the rest of your life.
