Balinese painter to display her works in Australia
DENPASAR (indo.com): Seniwati Gallery founder member
and painter Sri Supriyatini is to display her best works
at the Foyer Gallery, Canberra University, Australia from
September 24 through October, 2001. The exhibition, held
in conjunction with the Asian Conference of Women Empowerment,
will take women as its central theme.
According
to Mary Northmore, who will accompany Surpiyatni to Australia,
the idea of the exhibition is to show the world the much
underestimated talents of independent women artists resident
in Bali. "Women artist resident in Bali have created
numerous valuable artworks", she told indo.com.
Ms. Supriyanti added, "Life is colorful, full of
an ever-changing harshness and softness - likewise the
feelings of my heart which I try to express on canvas.
I myself choose sculpted objects, mossy stones and tones
which bring joy to my life."
Born in Yogya, Supriyati is a decorative genre woman
painter who married into a Balinese family. She has frequently
participated in art exhibitions in different parts of
Indonesia and has won two awards. In 1995, she was one
of three women artists invited to spend three months in
Germany as Artist-in-residence at Media Park Sud. Her
stay abroad allowed her to travel a lot and learn about
European traditions of art.
