KALIMANTAN The Indonesian side of Borneo contains great reserves of natural resources including oil, natural gas, coal, gold, uranium and rich timberland. Roads are few and far between, and water borne transportation moves cargo and passengers up and down the major rivers -the Mahakam, Barito, Kahayan and Kapuas. |
|
The Dayak peoples of the interior preserve many of their ancient ways, living in
longhouses ruled by their chief, carrying out ritual dancing and animal sacrifices as
dictated by tradition. Travelling upriver you will witness rare wildlife and birds in a relatively untouched habitat.

IRIAN JAYA Unbelievable sights await the visitor in the highlands of Irian Jaya, home of tribes of stone-age warrior farmers. The Dani tribesmen wear bright yellow penis gourds and the ladies wear grass skirts. They still grow their staple sweet potatoes in irrigated networks of raised mounds, and bravery in ritual warfare is a tradition that vindicates the honour of manhood.
