Bali's ancient artifacts on display at Museum of Pejeng

DENPASAR (indo.com): The Museum of Pejeng village, Gianyar, Bali, tells the story of the island through remains dating back thousands of years to the Megalithic (stoneage) era. Artifacts include some of the island's first pottery from near Gillimanuk, and various sarcophagi dating back to around 300 BC. Of particular interest are those carved in the shape of a turtle - the turtle has important cosmic associations in Balinese mythology.

The museum is conveniently located just 500 meters north of the Bedulu junction, near the much visited Elephant Cave. In addition to the attention the museum draws from local students and archeologists, foreign researchers have also found the museum's collections extremely useful. For the more casual visitor, it provides a fascinating glimpse of the simple lives led by our stone-age ancestors.

The museum is open from Monday to Thursday from 8 am - 3 pm, and on Friday until noon.
