"Pagerwesi", the day of iron fence falls
on June 2
DENPASAR (indo.com): The first four of the new Pawukon
cycle are special religious days and most Balinese people
in the northern part of the island will celebrate it feverishly.
The day is called Pagerwesi. This year's Pagerwesi Day
falls on June 2.
Pagerwesi is a special day for Hindus. As usual, locals
will put up "penjors" (a tall decorated bamboo
- pole), an exciting sight that you can find when locals
celebrate Galungan Day. They will also make special offerings
for the uncremated dead bodies in the cemeteries. The
offerings are usually placed at every house compound and
temples.
The word Pagerwesi derived from two Javanese words, pager
(fence) and wesi (iron). Pagerwesi literally means the
day of "iron fence". According to their belief,
one should surround oneself with a strong fortification
against the forces of evil.
The Pagerwesi Day is believed to be a day upon which
an ancient battle between good and evil is celebrated.
Based on Pakuwon, as other Balinese Hindu celebrations
like temple anniversaries, Galungan & Kuningan day,
Saraswati, otonan (Balinese birthday celebration), Pagerwesi
Day falls twice a year.
Pagerwesi Day will be preceded by the celebration of Soma
Ribek, which falls on Monday, May 31, 2004, during which
time a series of ritual ceremonies are held.
Following Soma Ribek celebration, Balinese Hindus will
continue to celebrate Sabuh Emas Day, which falls on Tuesday,
June 1, 2004 where colorful offerings are made and dedicated
to the Lord of Jewelries, especially gold jewelries and
Chinese coins.
Pagerwesi Day, which falls on June 2, 2004, will be the
peak of the ritual ceremonies.
