Sarong Pekalongan |
Rarely does one find such a well-matched pair of antique
batiks. These
extremely fine, hand-drawn sarongs were made in the renowned batik centre
of Pekalongan on the North Coast of Java,
probably around 1920. The
charming botanical patterns typical of Pekalongan were derived from Dutch
horticultural prints, and then rendered in astonishingly minute detail on
extra-smooth "primissima" cotton, in a process requiring weeks or even
months to complete. Both pieces prominently bear the signature of the
"Nyonya Indische" whose studio created them.
Each is 107cm x 207cm (only
half is visible in photo, as sarong ends are sewn together to create a
tube).
Excellent condition.
Price: US$439.00 for the pair.
