Ulos Parang Rusak |
A ceremonial cloth of the Lake Toba Batak people of North Sumatra, this
ulos exhibits fine warp ikat in classic white "arrowhead" designs, which
create a mesmerizing effect against a black and purplish-brown, striped
background. The centre field is bordered by wide lateral margins edged in
finely-patterned rows of supplementary weft and warp ikat work in rust-red,
white and black. Weft ends are finished with cotton twining, traditionally
the work of men, after women finish weaving the ulos by hand. A powerfully
dignified piece of hand weaving with a strong but subtle appeal.
Cotton,
natural dyes, excellent condition.
Approximately 30 to 50 years old.
68cm x 166cm.
